Facial Eczema
Facial Eczema is a serious condition in cattle caused by spores from a fungus found in warm, humid grass. These spores produce a toxin that damages the liver, affecting its ability to process toxins, produce energy, protein, and antibodies for immunity. Symptoms include skin issues like peeling and redness, decreased milk yield, poor body condition, and even abortions or deaths.
Interestingly, only about 30% of cows processed at Taranaki meat works show no signs of eczema damage, highlighting the widespread nature of the problem.
To prevent Facial Eczema, zinc is commonly used and can be given to cows in three main ways:
-
In-water treatment: Using a doesatron, zinc is added to drinking water.
-
In-shed feeding: Zinc is included in the feed.
-
Intra-ruminal boluses: Zinc boluses are administered directly into the rumen of the cows.
It's crucial for farmers to monitor pasture spore counts, especially during risky periods from January to May. During these times, protecting cows with zinc supplementation is essential to prevent Facial Eczema and its harmful effects.
At Coastal Vets, we rely on Face-Guard as a cornerstone of our facial eczema prevention protocol.
Face-Guard is available in three main sizes tailored to different livestock categories: Sheep, Calves (90-250kg), and Cows (250-660kg).
To maximize efficacy, Face-Guard should be administered before the onset of the risk period (before spore counts exceed 30,000). The initial Face-Guard bolus provides 6 weeks of protection, with an option for a booster dose to extend protection for an additional 4 weeks.
Testing Cows for Facial Eczema and Zinc levels
As cows who are clinically effected with facial eczema are only the "tip of the iceberg" we can test cows who may be sub-clinically effected. We do this by testing liver enzymes in the blood, often we will also test to check blood zinc levels to ensure there is adequate protection.
During the risk period Fonterra also offer test for zinc through bulk milk samples to ensure your herd has adequate protection.
Our skilled technician team is proficient in administering these boluses for your convenience. For calves, we require access to a vet race, and for heifers and cows, a head bale ensures safe and effective application.
