Body Condition Scoring
Body Condition Scoring (BCS) is a valuable method used to monitor the health and productivity of dairy cows by assessing their body fat. It provides insights into the overall well-being of the herd and helps maximize dairy production.
We assess cows using the Dairy NZ scoring system that focuses on scoring multiple different points to create an average for the cow. The score ranges from 1-10, cows which are a condition score 3 or less require immediate attention.
Two assessment approaches
-
Mob scoring – Cows are condition scored as a mob to get a herd average. This is used to ensure that targets are being achieved.
-
Individual scoring – Each cow is scored and recorded. This is critical for creating a dry-off plan.
When to Score – Scoring can be done at 4 stages during the season.
-
Pre-mating – Helps determine if cows are in condition for mating. Assess how much weight cows have lost over calving.
-
Mid-lactation – Assess cow condition helping to identify cows which may need preferential feeding or to be milk once-a-day.
-
Dry-off – Staggered dry off based on condition score and calving date ensuring cows have adequate time to gain condition prior to calving.
-
Pre-calving – Performed to ensure cows are in condition for calving (If not then this needs to be corrected for next season)
At Coastal Vets we have a team of Dairy NZ BCS certified accessors which can help you condition score your herd. With this information we can help make a staggered dry-off plan ensuring your cows are in optimal condition for calving, ultimately contributing to improved mating and reduced empty rates.
